Sarah Rustom - GMR Transcription Scholarship Winner

Throughout my life, I’ve been internally conflicted about discovering what career field I would like to pursue for the rest of my life. I’ve shadowed many different career options and I enjoyed each and every single one in their own special way. However, I always found myself not only being genuinely happier every time I shadowed a doctor but I loved being able to help people around me in need and truly make a difference in somebody’s life. I’ve shadowed a plethora of different fields in medicine but the one that ignited my passion was when I shadowed an oncologist in the Tomball Cancer Center. I often found myself getting excited to shadow at the Tomball Cancer Center because I loved being of assistance to the doctor and being able to help out in any way that I can. Everything I do I always find myself asking the question “How can I help?”, I believe that I can truly make a difference one day in the world which is lighted by my passion for helping others and being able to give back and inspire others who are not so fortunate in this world.

I am currently a Nutritional Science major at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. Our health is affected greatly by the foods we consume and cancer research has proven that some foods we digest may lead to an increased risk of cancer. I’ve gone through different many different majors but I believe that Nutritional Sciences will not only be beneficial in preparing me for Medical School but also help me learn about the way food affects our health and body. I am currently enrolled in Organic Chemistry accompanied by the lab, Biology accompanied by the lab, Religious and ethnic health foods, and a Life Science course.

I’ve learned through my experience that giving back is one of the best things a person can do in their life. Not only does giving back help the community and those around you but also I’ve learned so much about who I am as a person through my volunteer work. It is truly eye-opening to realize how even the smallest gestures can mean the world to somebody. I had previously had a big knee injury that required surgery and knew the struggles and difficulty that it required to do even simple daily tasks. I saw a person with crutches trying to walk upstairs because the building was not handicap friendly. I could see how much they were struggling and offered to carry their backpack and help them walk up the stairs. To me, this was a simple gesture to show that I knew what it felt like however this person told me “You made my day, I have been struggling all day and you are the first person to help me.” It made me so happy because no one had ever thanked me for such a big compliment for doing something so small.

I am currently involved in Delta Gamma Sorority, Pre-Medical Society, and Aggie Cupcakes, which is an organization that raises money for the Brazos Valley Food Bank through, bake sales. These organizations all have service as one of their many priorities and I am so thankful to be a part of organizations that contain people who not only want to better themselves but better their community around them in any way that they can.

If awarded this scholarship I will put the money towards my tuition. I truly believe that through my experiences I can make the most of this scholarship to further my education and make a difference in somebody’s life through a career in medicine.
