Studies have shown that taking breaks is important in order to maintain focus and boost productivity, and they’re also crucial to good health. Taking periodic breaks lessens the strain that working places on the heart, and it also clears the mind to alleviate stress.
Employers whose workers fail to take adequate breaks will find a decrease in their productivity. Once burnout sets in, workers will undoubtedly make more mistakes and work much slower. Burnout and physical exhaustion can result in tension headaches, sleeping problems and a host of other problems. The employee’s ability to problem solve will be inhibited and the result will be a decline in overall production.
There are some simple things you can do to take a quick break that will energize your body and your mind, as well as increase your productivity.
Deep Breathing Exercises
Take some deep breaths with your eyes closed for a few minutes. You’ll be surprised at how doing this simple exercise can give you more focus and more energy to tackle your next project.
Stand Up and Stretch
If you work at a computer (calling all transcriptionists), stand up and walk around at least once every hour. If you can manage it, try to do it every half hour. Working at a computer can distort time for you, making you unaware of how long you have been working on a task. It might help to set a timer to help remind yourself that it’s time for a break.
Eat Healthy Foods
During your breaks avoid heavy foods that will make you feel sluggish. Instead, choose healthy foods that will renew your energy as you face the afternoon. During smaller breaks, stash some healthy snacks in your desk. The vitamins found in carrot sticks or an apple will work wonders on your body, giving you renewed energy.And never forget to drink plenty of water!
You will have to retrain yourself in order to be sure you get the adequate number of breaks that you need in a day. But regardless of whether you work at home or in a traditional workplace, taking breaks will only make you a better worker.
