When business owners look for ways to influence success, they rarely think about the effects of good body language. Physical movements and posture don't just reflect your emotions but also, could give you that cutting edge in job interviews, presentations, meetings and negotiations. When properly used, you could boost productivity, encourage business relationships, motivate others and present transcription business ideas with an impact.

Why is Posture Important?

You wouldn't hire a frowning person who sits with their shoulders hunched and head bowed, over an individual with a powerful posture, would you? The power of posture is undeniable. Based on a study conducted by Amy Cuddy at the Harvard Business School, students who spent two minutes practicing sitting/standing poses gave more influential speeches during job interviews. Aside from the effect posture has on people's perceptions, it is also proven to improve breathing, digestion, and concentration.

The next time you're faced with a business situation, test out the following tips:

  1. Avoid Handheld Devices - Fiddling with handheld devices could have unintended effects on your confidence and state of mind. People show assertive behavior after they use computers or laptops when compared to smartphones or tablets.
  2. Facial Expressions and Tone of Voice - Smile and avoid frowning after staring at computer screens for long periods of time. According to research, people feel more powerful when they talk with a lower pitch.
  3. Stand Tall and Widen Stance - Your use of height and space is the window to your corporate sense of power and status. Stand and walk around if others are seated. If you are required to sit, widen your arms and put your feet flat on the floor. This will make you look professional and "solid".
  4. Positive Eye Contact - Aim to look into another business professional's eyes long enough to figure out what color they are. This is a good way to improve eye contact, which employers and other business people will expect you to maintain for at least 50 percent of the time.
  5. Open Gestures - Your movements should be relaxed, and you should display your palms when talking. This will signal honesty and credibility.
