We’re back to announce the second winner of our GMR Transcription scholarship! This scholarship awards $500 to two college students for not only demonstrating high scholastic achievement, but for diversification in extracurricular activities and financial needs. Of the many applicants, it was difficult to narrow it down to two.
Today, we have the globe-spanning story of Victor Tarta Nga, from his beginnings in Cameroon to future in the US.
American Hall of Fame basketball player, Bill Bradley once said, “Ambition is the path to success. Persistence is the vehicle you arrive in.” In order to be successful in life, one must nurture his ambitions into reality.
I have grown up with the ambition of becoming a Petroleum Engineer who would bring new innovations to the Engineering society. I attended my secondary and high school education in Cameroon before moving to the US to continue with my university education. I am currently attending Houston Community College where I study Petroleum Engineering as my major, and plan to transfer to Texas A&M University to complete my Bachelor Degree program. I have completed most of my prerequisites and presently enrolled in Calculus 3, Introduction to Engineering, Programming for Engineers and University Physics, for the fall 2014 semester. I presently have a GPA of 3.932 and hope to continue studying hard in order to maintain a good GPA, which is of great priority to my educational goals.
As a student who strives hard for immerse success, I am a star member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. I also a student member of the Society of Petroleum Engineer (SPE), a member of National Society of Collegiate Scholars and a member of the International Dean’s List Society. Furthermore, I have a passion for soccer, a sport I have been playing since childhood. I am a member of the Houston Community College Soccer team where I am the active vice-captain, and I am also a member of a developmental soccer club called the Houston Soccer Club. Outside studies and other societal involvements, I am always playing soccer to keep fit and to improve my skills.
Since coming to the US, I have not had any work experience yet due to the fact that I am an international student and had to wait for a year before being approved to work out of campus. However, I have work experience back in Cameroon working as a library attendant and a computer lab assistant at a home based city council. I have also carried out community service at the Alief YMCA. At this location, I helped in cleaning the field, marking the edges of the soccer field, putting goal post before a game is about to start, and taking it off after the game. Notwithstanding, I hope to acquire more work and internship experience as I continue in my educational ladder.
Since my childhood days, I used to admire watching the Science Channel, which spoke about inventions in the field of science. Watching this gave me the zeal to aim towards making an innovation that would touch many lives now and in future generations. As I grew older, my career interest became lured towards Petroleum Engineering and that is where I presently stand as my further profession. I want to use the knowledge I would acquire to develop a better method of drilling oil and gas from the earth without it having much negative impact on the environment. Presently, Alabama and a few other states are experiencing minor earthquakes due to the effect of “fracking,” a method used for drilling oil from the earth. I want to develop a more efficient method, which would have little effect on the environment and hence, keep people safe from unforeseen disasters.
I hope to be able to achieve a good education and successfully acquire my Bachelor’s Degree with little hindrances. One of such hindrance is financial problems which are most likely during the course of one’s studies. Getting this scholarship would assist me in funding for some of my financial expenses, which goes a long way in helping me achieving my career goals. I hope to get this scholarship to help me in reducing my financial burden as I strive to complete my university education.
